ChatGPT referrals at an auto-parts store, Q3 2026
What ChatGPT referrals did at an auto-parts retailer whose Shopify online store OptiVis builds and runs. Published October 4, 2026.
The finding
In Q3 2026, visitors referred by ChatGPT converted at 12.6%: 19 orders from 151 sessions. Visitors from Google search converted at 1.9%: 76 orders from 3,988 sessions. By sales, ChatGPT was the store's second-largest named referral source, behind Google.
Read this with the denominators. 19 orders is a small number. A handful of orders either way would move the ChatGPT rate a lot. This is attribution, not proof that ChatGPT caused the sales.

These are the Shopify Online Store channel only, the part of the business OptiVis builds and runs. Counter and phone sales are a separate channel and are not included. ChatGPT referrals are a small share of this growth, and the growth has more than one cause. We do not attribute it to any single change.
Methodology
- Source. Shopify's own analytics for the store, queried with ShopifyQL on October 4, 2026.
- Windows. Q3 2026 is July 1 to September 30, 2026. Q3 2025 is the same dates a year earlier.
- Attribution. Sessions and orders are grouped by the referrer Shopify records. Conversion is sessions that completed checkout divided by sessions. Shopify can only credit a source it can see, and many visits arrive with no referrer at all.
- Paid clicks excluded. The store ran a paid ChatGPT ads test in September 2026. Those ad clicks are not among the 151 ChatGPT sessions counted here.
- Online store channel. Online store figures are Shopify's Online Store sales channel. Point of sale (counter and phone) is excluded.
- Privacy. The retailer agreed to publication of these figures. We do not name the store.
What this does not show
- It does not show that ChatGPT caused these sales. It shows where Shopify attributed them.
- It does not show that every store would see the same rates. This is one store, one quarter, and small numbers.
- It does not measure how often the store appears in ChatGPT answers. No outside tool can see that.
